An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
